Our Operations – Projects

Current Active Rolling Stock

Our active rolling stock includes our first fully restored and commissioned 1905 Peckett steam locomotive and fully restored 1913 timber passenger carriage, two section car units (the Tinander and Tablelander Express), a restored and regauged former cane train locomotive (the Pie Cart) which is used for track maintenance work, and a “Man Car” shunting unit that started its life in an underground mine at Illawarra (NSW), shifting workers and equipment.

Tinlander & Tablelander Express trains.

Our little section car trains can carry between 10 and 20 passengers. They run from Herberton railway station to the Historic Village Herberton. They also run in Atherton, from the Station Café to Hastie Road, and both about 20-minute return runs.

1905 Peckett Steam Locomotive and 1913 QR Passenger Carriage.

It took 90,000 volunteer hours to restore the steam locomotive and passenger carriage, and they are now fully operational. Our steam train rides operate between Herberton Railway Station and the Historic Village Herberton and return.

People who are visiting the Historic Village  (on our running days) may also buy a ticket and ride from the Historic Village to Herberton Railway Station and return. PLEASE NOTE: Return arrangements must be confirmed.

The Pie Cart Loco.

This former cane train locomotive has been regauged and restored and is our Track Maintenance Vehicle No.1. It is used to move rolling stock, transport equipment along our rail line for track maintenance, and to conduct track inspections.

Underground “Man Car” shunter

The “Man Car” is used to move rolling stock in and out of our maintenance workshop in Herberton, it is also used for moving equipment along our rail line, and for conducting track inspections.

Current Projects

Our workshop in Herberton currently has a number of projects underway.

1913 QR Wooden Passenger Carriage.

The first of two Queensland Rail passenger carriages is currently fully restored and operational. Another wooden passenger carriage is currently being restored by members of the Herberton Men’s Shed, to its former glory within our Herberton workshop.

Another 1908 Peckett Steam Locomotive under restoration work

A second Peckett Steam Locomotive, built in 1908, is currently in our workshop and being dismembered so that it can be rebuilt and become a second fully operational unit to join its older twin sister.

2000 Class Rail Motors

Two 2000 Class Rail Motors, 2024 and 2031, have made their way to our Herberton Station railway maintenance facility. They are now on the long journey to full restoration and operation. That work will see them, in late 2024, running from Herberton station to Moomin. As the rail tracks are further upgraded, from Atherton to Herberton, we will be extending our train runs and options.

Moomin.

The first stage of Moomin Station’s development has taken place, with a concrete platform being installed. Landscaped areas and building works have commenced.

Our rail Network

Our 22km rail network is a major focus, with continuing track upgrades and maintenance work along with major bridges 19 and 20 currently under rebuilds (September – October). These take time and substantial funds to complete but will allow us to get to Moomin.

We have support from across our communities with volunteers and local groups supporting our common rail corridor upgrades. Prisoners from the Lotus Glen correctional centre work with our teams in rail track maintenance and rail corridor vegetation managements.

*A number of other projects are either underway or being planned.

Moomin

Our next major location is Moomin. This includes a siding and will see a number of facilities developed in the next 6 months. We have already had a concrete platform installed with other earth works underway.
